What is a Foot Ulcer?

A foot ulcer is a red crater on the top of the skin, anywhere on the foot. It has a deep red center with a thick skinned border (which thickens over time) and can limit to the surface of the skin or can extend deep in the tissues and muscles.

Initially, the foot ulcer may appear just on the top of the skin, but in severe cases it descends deep in layers of the skin and exposes the tendons and bones inside. If functioning nerves lie beneath the foot ulcer, pain may be felt by the individual, otherwise it might go unnoticed.

People having diabetes and poor circulation issues mostly grow foot ulcers. It’s very difficult to treat foot ulcers once they have developed, hence why it is highly advisable to seek immediate treatment for an early foot ulcer.

Types of Foot Ulcers

Ulcers are wounds that don’t heal easily and are may be very painful. Foot ulcers are usually explained by their overall appearance, appearance of the border and their location. The most common types of foot ulcers are as follows:

Venous Ulcer

They usually appear on the inner part of the leg mainly on the top of the knee. They might extend to the second leg if the first is affected. If the wound is infected it would release greenish discharge.

Neurotrophic Ulcer

This kind of ulcer is developed when a patient loses sensation in the foot. It can be caused by chronic alcohol abuse and is most common in diabatic patients. They occur in weight bearing areas and start developing as a callus.

Arterial Ulcer

This develops due to deficient blood supply to a certain area in lower extremities. They mainly attack the region of the lower leg and lower feet. It ranges from acute to chronic level. This is the most painful type of ulcer.

    Foot Ulcer Cause

    People with diabetes are usually at high risk of developing foot ulcers but sufficient care of the feet can help in its prevention. 

    Foot ulcers are mainly caused by the following reasons:

    • Hyperglycemia

    Foot Ulcer Symptoms

    Ulcers mainly cause the loss of normal integrity of the skin structure. They are very slow to heal and often have the following symptoms:

    • Reddish skin
    • Blisters formation
    • Loss of skin thickness
    • Peeling skin
    • Bloody drainage
    • Loss of subcutaneous tissue
    • Breaks in muscles and tendons
    • Infection of the bone.

    Foot Ulcer Treatments

    There are several diabetic foot ulcer treatment guidelines, such as utilising appropriate therapeutic footwear and applying dressings to provide moisture to the wound.
