What is Parkinson’s Disease?

It can be defined as a progressive neurological disorder in which brain cells weaken or die. Parkinson’s disease occurs due to death/impairment of neurons in the brain that produce dopamine (a neurotransmitter), however it is still unknown why these cells die.

Classic symptoms of Parkinson’s disease include negative changes in the behaviour and movement of an individual: symptoms are negligible at first and increase gradually. With the passage of time; walking and speech are negatively affected – along with other possible symptoms.

Men are more susceptible to Parkinson’s disease than women, however women can also be affected. Majority of the time; age is the highest risk factor of Parkinson’s disease, symptoms of most patients tend to develop around 60, however a minority experienced symptoms before the age of 50.

Treatment can help in providing relief from symptoms, however it can never be fully cured. Medication is normally the first line treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Alternative treatment for Parkinson’s include surgery and therapies such as physiotherapy and laser therapy.

Parkinson’s Symptoms Stages

Stage 1

Early stages of Parkinson’s disease show symptoms that include slight changes in movement, posture and facial expressions, and may go unnoticed at this stage. Tremors and movement symptoms typically impact one side of the body. Daily tasks are not heavily impacted during this stage.

Stage 2

Movement, posture, facial expressions and tremors worsen, which may now affect both sides of the body. Speech may also be affected. Daily tasks are now slightly impacted, and they may take more time to complete by themselves.

Stage 3

Symptoms are similar to stage 2, however additional symptoms appear. This includes loss of balance, slower movements and decreased reflexes, making it more difficult to complete daily tasks – however still manageable by the individual.

Stage 4

Previous symptoms are now severe – it is possible for the individual to stand, however movement may require a walker. Individuals in stage 4 show significant reductions in their capabilities for daily activities and it is not safe for them to live alone, as falls are quite common.

Stage 5

End stage Parkinson’s disease symptoms include the inability to stand or walk. Hallucinations, delusions and dementia are also quite common in the last stages of Parkinson’s disease. The individual is required to be in a wheelchair or may even be bedridden. Permanent assistance is required.

    Parkinson’s Disease Causes

    Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disorder in which brain cells gradually weaken or even die. Many symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are due to loss of neuron functioning. The main cause of Parkinson’s disease is not known but the following factors are referred as triggers:
