What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis is a medical disorder of joints. It is a chronic inflammatory condition that spreads to the surrounding when it affects any joint. In many cases it may lead to body system damage which may include lung damage, eye damage, heart damage etc. 

Rheumatoid arthritis develops when the body’s immune system starts attacking its own synovium which is a structure present in the membrane lining surrounding the joints. It leads to the inflammation of synovium making it thick in diameter, this then damages the lining of joints leading to swollen joints causing bone erosion. This may occur in a variety of joints including your hand, feet, cervical joints, knee, neck, jaw, back etc. The inflammation linked to it can also damage nearby body systems.

In early stages, rheumatoid arthritis mostly affects smaller joints, mainly the finger/hand joints and toe/feet joints. With the passage of time, the inflammation reaches our wrist and ankle.

It is difficult to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis in its early stages as similar symptoms are seen for a variety of other medical conditions, and as a result rheumatoid arthritis can be misdiagnosed. The doctor examines your body for signs such as inflammation, this is where misdiagnosis occurs. In the later stages, doctors may examine your blood in order to diagnose this disease correctly.

Rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis criteria

There are 3 types of rheumatoid arthritis as follows:

Seropositive Rheumatoid Arthritis

It is a chronic inflammatory condition of the joints. A person with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis has antibodies in their bloodstream which assist in diagnosing the disease.

Seronegative Rheumatoid Arthritis

It is the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis without having certain types of antibodies in the patient. It leads to immense pain accompanied with swelling and stiffness.

Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis

This causes inflammation & stiffness of the joints in children under the age of 16. It is an autoimmune disease in which the body mistakenly treats its own cells and tissues as foreign particles and begins to harm them. Blood tests are used to help diagnose this.
